The Piano Lesson Themes - Sutters Ghost

Supernatural themes lurk throughout August Wilsons drama, The Piano Lesson. But to fully understand the function of the ghost character in The Piano Lesson, readers may want to become familiar with the plot and characters of The Piano Lesson. Sutters Ghost During the play, several characters see the ghost of Mr. Sutter, the man who probably murdered the father of Berniece and Boy Willie. Sutter was also the legal owner of the piano. There are different ways of interpreting the ghost: The ghost is a product of the characters imagination.The ghost symbolizes oppression.Or it is an actual ghost! Assuming the ghost is real and not symbolism, the next question is: What does the ghost want? Revenge? (Berniece believes that her brother pushed Sutter down a well). Forgiveness? (This doesnt seem likely since Sutters ghost is antagonistic rather than repentant). It may simply be that Sutters ghost wants the piano. In Toni Morrisons beautiful foreword to the 2007 publication of The Piano Lesson, she states: Even a threatening ghost hovering in any room it chooses pales before the gripping fear of what is outside - the steady, casual intimacy with imprisonment and violent death. She also observes that Against years of menace and routine violence, wrestling with a ghost is mere play. Morrisons analysis is spot on. During the plays climax, Boy Willie enthusiastically battles the ghosts, running up the stairs, tumbling down again, only to go charging back up. Grappling with the specter is sport in comparison to the hazards of the oppressive 1940s society. Spirits of the Family Bernieces suitor, Avery, is a religious man. In order to disconnect the ghosts ties to the piano, Avery agrees to bless Bernieces house. When Avery, an up-and-coming reverend, passionately recites passages from the Bible, the ghost does not budge. In fact, the ghost becomes even more aggressive, and this is when Boy Willie finally witnesses the ghost and their battle begins. In the middle of The Piano Lessons chaotic final scene, Berniece has an epiphany. She realizes that she must call on the spirits of her mother, father, and grandparents. She sits down at the piano and, for the first time in a year, she plays. She sings for the spirits of her family to help her. As her music becomes more powerful, more insistent, the ghost goes away, the battle upstairs ceases, and even her stubborn brother has a change of heart. Throughout the play, Boy Willie demanded that he sell the piano. But once he hears his sister play the piano and sing to her deceased relatives, he understands that the musical heirloom is meant to stay with his Berniece and her daughter. By embracing music once again, Berniece and Boy Willie now appreciate the pianos purpose, one that is both familiar and divine.

Every year, millions of people die all over the world due to disease, war, and old age, but hunger is commonly overlooked. Diseases like cancer are constantly being studied in order to find a cure, but for hunger, there is one cure: food. While charity is essential to fighting hunger in Africa, it only meets short-term needs. It feeds people, clothes them, and gives them shelter, but it does not solve the issue of hunger and the reasons hunger exists. Justice enables social change, strikes the core of the problem, resulting in long-lasting changes, and embraces fundamental human rights. Everyone should have the right to food, the right to not be plagued by the perpetual pursuit of filling that void in their life, the right to be free from longing, and the right to life. Code blue: the signal for an adult medical emergency. In a matter of seconds, the head nurse gave each staff member their orders and like an efficient machine, everyone went straight to work. My instinct was to run. Right in front of my eyes a patient’s heart had ceased to beat. The room filled with urgency as I filled with enough panic I nearly choked on it. With difficulty, I swallowed the lump in my throat containing all my fear and looked to my internship supervisor for instruction. The First Intifada changed the direction of the peace process and affected every Palestinians’ life. The Intifada was a mass movement against the Israeli authority through boycotts, civil disobedience and general strikes. Israel reacted to the Intifada by deploying 80,000 troops to stop the uprising by â€Å"breaking Palestinians’ bones†[Footnote]. The Oslo Accords were signed by both Israel and Palestine to end the Intifada and create a stable peace which gave Palestinians freedom and Israelis security. A man and a women, sitting across from one another at a table and in the center of the table, an orange, Orange, in the middle of the table nd you, sitting across the table, at a distance with your smile contained, and like the orange in the sun; silent {Quote}. This could be taking place somewhere as simple as Atwoods personal kitchen or maybe in a park at a picnic bench. The woman is sitting there with orange and man in perfect line of view. She first stares at the orange. Her eyes move from the orange to the man and she notices how alike they are because she has no idea whats going on in the inside of either one. The situation then becomes uncomfortable for Atwood as she realizes she is sitting across from someone who is as quiet and awkwardly easily compared to an orange. She wants to know everything about the man including past, present and future. It is not enough that he is just smiling, sitting across from her. As she continues to describe her intense feelings on how she wants to know whats inside the man, she mentions a thing of great importance. Instead of the poem being an  actual scene, it could really be taking place anywhere. Maybe she is describing an on-going thought, in which she feels the same wonderment whenever she is sitting across from this man. So, she says, and you, man, orange afternoon lover, wherever you sit across from me tables, trains, buses if I watch quietly enough and long enough. It seems as though Atwood realizes that she may never really ever know what the man is thinking, and she will probably always have the same thoughts when sitting across from the man, wherever they are. The reader can now identify with this situation. Atwood weaves words together so that it could be any woman or man, any where, any place, sitting across from a person of the opposite sex wanting to know what the other is all about. Atwood discovers that through each conversation she would find, there are mountains inside your skull garden and chaos, ocean and hurricane; certain corners of rooms, portraits of great-grandmother s, curtains of a particular shade; your deserts; our private dinosaurs; the first womanMuller 256. These sorts of answers could only be explained and interpreted through several conversations through life. And even then, the answers given to Atwoods questions might not be understood and she would be left off right where she left off, with no true understanding at all. But she doesnt care, she wants to know everything from the beginning.
